What are some use cases for the QR codes that you create with the QR Code Scanner?
As you probably already know, QR codes can be extremely versatile! Here are some app-specific use cases for QR codes that will give you a better understanding of what you can create QR codes for:
Physical Therapy or Gym app - You can create QR codes for different exercise machines or zones in your facility that when scanned, tells the user recommended reps or exercises to do.
Church app - One of the most important things for churches is to help new visitors to feel welcome and connected. You can set up QR codes to give them quick access to your contact information, list of small groups, or a special welcome message created specifically for newcomers.
Local Attractions app - If you’re building an app for a local attraction such as a Zoo or a Museum, you can include additional information or fun tidbits about your exhibits within your app. QR codes are a great way to bring users that information.
Apps with Paid Content - Most apps that have paid content will have some “sampler” content that’s free for users to give them a taste of what to expect when paying for premium content. With QR codes, you can send users to this free content or directly to your latest paid content.
What are the QR Code Scanner’s two main functions and what are the steps to accomplish them?
As we mentioned earlier, the QR Code Scanner has two main functions which are QR code generation and QR code scanning. First, we’ll go over how to create a QR code.
In order to create QR codes in the App Dashboard, you’ll need to be familiar with Action Items and the Action Builder, as you use the Builder to create the QR codes. If you’re not familiar with either Action Items or the Action Builder, then we encourage you to check out our dedicated article on those here.
Once you’re familiar with these two elements, you’re ready to create your first QR Code.
How To Create A QR Code In The App Dashboard
Step 1: Click “Add QR Code”
This will open up the Action Builder:
Step 2: Select the Action Item that you want to assign to the QR code
Next, you’ll need to decide what type of Action will take place when people scan that QR code. For this example, we will be linking users to a website.
Step 3: (Optional) Give the Action a Title
While this is optional, we highly recommend that you give the Action a title in the “Action Button Text” field:
Doing this will help you identify what that code is for and becomes really handy as you begin to create multiple QR codes within the feature. You can also give the Action an image icon if you like in the “Image Icon” section, though both of these are solely for identifying purposes for you and have no effect on the QR code itself or the action that happens when it’s scanned.
Step 4: Click “Save”
Once all the necessary fields are completed, click the “Save” button which will complete the creation of that code.
As you create QR codes you’re able to view and download them by clicking on “Preview” next to a code:
This will display the QR code for that particular Action. You can download that code as an image file so that it can be used elsewhere, such as your website or other promotional material:
If you want to edit a QR code’s action, you can do so by clicking on the “Edit” button. If you want to remove it, you can do so by clicking on the red “X” next to it:
Now that you know how to create QR codes for your app, let’s go over how users use the QR Code Scanner to scan those codes.
How users use the QR Code Scanner to scan your QR codes
Using the QR Code Scanner to scan codes is a simple two-step process:
While in app, users will navigate to where your QR Code Scanner is located. In this example, we've added it to our Side Menu. Users can then tap on the QR Code Scanner feature to open it:
Tap “Scan”:
Once the user taps “Scan,” the camera on their phone will open which allows them to scan the QR code.
Note: Users who tap on the “Scan” button for the first time may be prompted to give your app permissions to access their phone’s camera. This is normal and they should not be prompted again when opening the QR Code Scanner.
It’s as simple as that! Once the QR code is scanned, the Action that you assigned to it will be performed. Some of these actions include taking them to a specific section of your app, a website, calling a phone number as well as a variety of other options.
What Are Some Pro Tips That We Think Will Help You With The QR Code Scanner?
As you can see creating QR codes in the QR Code Scanner is almost as easy as using the feature itself! Here are some pro tips we think will help you make the best use of the QR Code Scanner.
Pro Tip 1: Be creative with your QR code Actions
The list of Actions that you can set up for your QR codes is full of great opportunities to use these codes for more than just taking people to areas of your app. Do you want people to be able to scan the code and send you a contact form? You can set up a QR code to do just that! You’re only limited by your imagination.
Pro Tip 2: Put the QR Code Scanner in your app’s Side or Footer menus for quick access
One way you can make the QR Code Scanner easily accessible for your users is by adding it to your app’s Side Menu or Footer Menu. This puts the feature only a tap or two away at all times, which can be extremely beneficial if you’re going to use a lot of QR codes.
Pro Tip 3: You can use QR codes in promotional material to direct people to your latest premium paid content
As we mentioned before, you can use the QR codes for a lot of things such as sending users to your app’s latest in-app purchases with the quick scan of a QR code. Have a new series of devotions in your faith-based app available for purchase? Use a QR code in your social media ads to send users directly to that content so that they can purchase it right away!
